Wychwood CE Primary School
Some of our classes were studying explorers and David Hempleman-Adams came and gave a talk to the children in KS1and LKS2. The children were fascinated by his talk, which included how to cope with frostbite and how tall a polar bear is. The highlight, though, was to find out what food they ate on their expeditions ( see our photograph) and how they cope with going to the toilet!
Year 5/6 classes were treated to a special visit from actor Anthony Pedley who performed a one man show about the life of Roald Dahl. The children were enthralled with the performance. Charlie M told me he really loved it. His favourite part was when the actor read some excerpts from poems and The BFG with great enthusiasm.
Help on Hand
Foundation Stage have been learning about People Who Help Us and had visits from a doctor, a vet and a policeman and visited a fire station. On the trip they learnt about all the different equipment used and the fire fighters’ uniform. They followed this up by looking at materials to decide which would be the best to make a pair of fire fighters’ gloves.
Also on the theme of fire, Year 5/6 classes had a visit from the fire service and learned about fire prevention and drawing up a fire plan for home.
Sporting News
Some of our Year 5 and 6 children went to Burford School for the annual Netball tournament. Our A team finished second, winning all their games on the way to the final. The B team finished fifth, showing improvements after each match.
After winning the Partnership Athletics competition our Year 5/6 Athletics team competed in the West Oxfordshire Indoors Athletics final. The standard was very high and we finished in a respectable 5th place. Well done to all the children who took part.
House Poetry Competition
We enjoyed two assemblies watching the Poetry finalists perform their poems. We were treated to fantastic performances from the children. In KS2 the overall winner for Year 5/6 was James Elderfield who treated us to an atmospheric poem complete with props. Alfie Arnold won the competition for Year 3/4 with a humourous poem about food. In KS1 the overall winner was Caillah Knight with a lovely poem about her mum’s cooking. Second place went to Archie Townsend who had worked with his mum to write a poem about the teachers, and third place went to Martha Sibley who had learnt a poem about the differences between boys and girls.
